Finding coolant under your car is no way to start your day! You may be asking yourself “What happened?” Most likely your water pump has failed.
After the engine has cooled; check the coolant fluid level and then take your car to a quality repair shop. Perhaps Bob’s Auto Service! ** Note: if the engine is out of coolant, have your car towed. You risk destroying the engine if you drive it when out of fluid.
The technicians will test the coolant to see if it is dirty or of poor quality. New coolant is a bright green color. Over time it turns to a brownish rust color. This means it needs to be changed.
If the color is ok, the technician will test the coolant with a hydrometer. This tool checks the freezing point of the coolant. The ideal temperature should be -40 to -60. Really important for our Wisconsin winter weather! In your case, the technician will probably recommend a transmission fluid flush. A flush will remove dirty coolant, and replace it with additives that protect the water pump.
