A shaking car can really increase that stress level quickly! The good news is that there are 3 fairly common reasons that could be the cause of your car’s shaking and it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg.
Here are those three common problems that can cause a car to shake:
- The first and most common reason for a car to shake is related to tires. Out of balance tires can make your car shake. This starts around 50-55 mph, but starts to get better at speeds over 60 mph. If this is the case you will need to rotate tires. Don’t be surprised if you also need to replace some or all tires as well. Preventive maintenance is ALWAYS the better way to go.
2. Brake rotors can also cause shaking. If your steering wheel also shakes while you are braking the cause could be caused by “out of round” brake rotors. You will also notice this vibration through your brake pedal.
3. A third cause of shaking could be a brake caliper sticking on. When this happens you will experience a vibration through the steering wheel starting at 45 to 50 miles per hour. It will get very bad, the faster you go. You may also smell a burning odor when you stop.
Don’t let this become your car’s fate. Regular maintenance is key to keeping you on the road and to enjoy all the things you want to do.
