I have heard horror stories about timing belts breaking and causing permanent engine damage! How can I prevent this from happening to me? Understanding some general information about timing belts will help you to avoid a broken timing belt. First, timing belts should be replaced between 60,000 to 100,00 miles. So, you will need to start inspecting your belt for any wear periodically at the 60,000-mile point. Secondly, a timing belt, that is wearing out, will start make a ticking noise. If you hear this noise, be sure to make an appointment to have your belt checked. The other two things that can happen is a no start or when an engine is misfiring. Timing belts are the second most important maintenance item for vehicles; with oil changes being number one. A broken timing belt is a big deal! Although replacing it can be costly, having it break is even more costly.  

Getting repairs or maintenance done on our vehicles just isn't fun. We have to go without our vehicles for a day to a week or longer. Many of us put off repairs and/or maintenance for many different reasons. The danger in doing this, of course, is we risk creating more issues or damage to our vehicles. I have an idea that is really simple and easy to do. Follow these 4 steps for each of your vehicles on a WEEKLY basis. That's it... just once a week! 1. Check the tire pressure--- In winter months they are going to read lower than recommended so be sure to check them after the car has been driven a few miles. After you get home from work or running errands, would be a great time. 2. Check your hoses for cracks, dry or brittle material. 3, Top off your coolant and washer fluid 4. Check your oil. Signs you may need a new battery: 1. Engine not starting or slow to start- check your connections are tight 2. Erratic or low voltage from the battery- vehicle acts differently and pattern is inconsistent. 3. Corrosion-check for a greenish-grey crumbly buildup on the connections 4. Physical Damage-cracked case or other damage, loose connections can damage the inside of the battery. 5. Age- because batteries go through extreme temperatures, the average battery will need to be replaced every 3 years. Please check your battery/batteries now while the weather is unseasonably warm this week!
