Cars and Summer Vacation

Cars and Summer Vacation

Do you have your summer vacation all planned out? What about your car, van or truck that is staying at home while you are gone? You might be tempted to unhook the battery but don't do it. Keep the battery hooked up as usual. Your battery will be just fine. Unhooking it could cause problems. It just isn't worth it. It is possible for the brakes to seize and brake pads could become rusty. To avoid a bigger problem, do not engage the parking brake. Be sure to wash and if possible, wax the outside of your vehicle. This is important when the vehicle is not going to be driven for an extended period of time. Tree sap, dirt and bird droppings can cause paint damage if left on for extended periods of time. Let's talk about those critters that seem to be attractive to vehicles that do not move often. You don't want to come back from a very nice vacation to issues with rodents. Trust me on this one! Can Oil Leaks Lead to Big Issues?

Can Oil Leaks Lead to Big Issues?

Can oil leaks lead to damage to other parts of your vehicle? The simple answer is YES! Oil lubricates the moving parts and helps to disperse heat. If your vehicle is low on oil due to a leak it can cause unnecessary wear and tear on engine components. Leaks can also damage the radiator. Any accumulated oil can wear down the seals and hoses. Ultimately coolant leaks and problems with the air conditioning and heating systems will happen. If you suspect an oil leak in your vehicle, you need to get it in and have the source of the leak diagnosed. It could be a degraded gasket, oil pan leak or a loose or missing oil pan drain plug. Most times, oil leaks can be found during those necessary oil changes. When you got your first car, someone instilled in you the necessity of regular oil changes. Now you know why!

The Suspension System

The Suspension System

Shocks are the main component of a vehicle's suspension system. But there are other key parts to this system as well. Springs, control arms and sway bars are the other main parts. All 4 of these parts work together to give you the smooth ride that you expect. Some indications of a suspension issue could be: 1. car is bouncing more than usual 2. uneven tire wear 3. nose diving or rear squatting 4. knocking or clunking sounds While these are some rather overt indications of an issue; it is a good idea to have your suspension looked at once per year. Like many things on our vehicles, a poorly working suspension can lead to other issues and become more costly than necessary. If you notice your ride is not as smooth as it normally is, give us a call to have a look. 608-782-1375
